Looking at What Works in On-Demand to Take Students to the
Core and Beyond

Why do some schools do so well on the on-demand writing assessment while others seem to struggle? Want to know what those successful schools are doing? This session will focus on classroom practices employed by four high schools in Kentucky that have high scores on the on-demand writing assessment. Participants will receive a number of resources to use in the classroom in preparation for the upcoming assessment.

Presenter: Debbie Bell, Murray State University

After spending seventeen years teaching English in Murray, Dr. Bell assumed a teaching position in the Department of English and Philosophy teaching writing composition and English Education courses to middle and high school preservice teachers at Murray State University. She is also the Co-Director of the Purchase Area Writing Project on campus, which facilitates professional development for teachers in literacy with a focus on writing. Her focus in research is on-demand writing assessment since she knows the frustration teachers experience in preparing students for writing assessment and hopes her findings will help teachers across the state.
