Picture Books in the Middle School Classroom

Picture books are no longer just for the beginning reader! Whether
you call them trade books or mentor texts, picture books can be a
great addition to any classroom. Present difficult concepts in a non-
threatening way; focus on specific subject matter and skills; establish
a purpose for learning; activate visual learning. In our classroom, we
do three things daily - read closely, think deeply, write purposefully...
and many times we accomplish all this with a picture book. So grab
some great picture books, open them up in your classroom, and let
the learning (and fun) begin!
